Last Sunday afternoon, Joan Landis, Bill Lake, my husband, Michael and I drove to San Francisco's Presidio to see one of our members, Janie Marie Davis Chambers, receive an Honorable Mention Award in The California Watercolor Association's National Competition. From 800 entries, 100 were chosen to be in the show and just a handful received awards. I have so say, I suspected it was a big deal when I heard about this event, but I wasn't prepared for the reality. There was wine. There was food. Good food. It was in a beautiful place, the Presidio's Officer's Club. I would estimate 400 people were there, enjoying the festivities and ooooohing over the art. There were a couple of speeches and lots of applause. As the winners were recognized and their art was projected on a large screen, they made their way to the stage to receive their recognition. It was a great celebration of fine art. The Jurist, Christopher Schink, said something that resonated with me and drew a solid chuckle from the crowd. "Most of us produce our art somewhere in a crappy room with a bunch of stuff stored in it." I took home a good feeling, knowing that I am in good company. My messy little art studio that triples as my computer room and business office fits right to the pattern of these stunning artists' habits. Maybe someday....(sigh). I am not jealous of Janie's achievement. I swear I'm not. But I admit I am a bit envious. She deserves this recognition for her stellar achievement. Janie paints regularly and works very hard at it. I'm sure she will be famous some day. And we will ALL be able to say "I knew her when she was in Pinole Artisans." She was beautiful and gracious last Sunday. Wish you had all been there. Keep creating!
